A drenaline crashed through Bradley’s system as he watched Wheeler struggle with the netting. The shifter was on the ground and still in human form. He’d been waiting for her to shift back into the bird but had shot too soon. Wheeler shed the net and stepped in front of the woman, blocking his shot as she shifted.

Bradley cursed. If he’d just been a bit quicker coming down the mountain he’d have been in place long before they came out of the building. Then he wouldn’t have been in such a rush. His hand shook as he leveled the rifle and looked through the scope.

The blur behind Wheeler faded and a falcon took to the night sky, screeching angrily. Wheeler dropped the netting and ran straight toward the trees. Panic hit Bradley and he fired. The shot echoed through the valley, and Wheeler stumbled at the impact. Bradley didn’t stick around to see him fall; he grabbed the net gun and hustled his way back up the mountain.

When he got to his truck, his heart was pounding and sweat was streaming down his face as he cursed himself. He’d left because he hadn’t wanted to get caught by the authorities. Someone was sure to have heard the shot, but now he realized he should’ve stuck around.

There was no guarantee the shifter would’ve returned to Wheeler’s side, but there had been a chance.

“Ahh, it’s all good, boy,” he mumbled to himself as he opened the back of the SUV and crawled inside. He put the net gun away inside the weapons box and lay down with the rifle by his side. “The thrill is in the chase.”

He worked at calming himself. He needed to get some sleep so he would be sharp the next morning, because the chase had just begun.
